When I first learned that my future host family lived in Massachusetts I was a little bit disappointed. I was coming to the United States and I was hoping that during the year I would experience lots of new things which I can't experience in Slovakia. From my history classes in college I knew that Massachusetts was the state where the Pilgrims landed and where the history of the United States begun, but I couldn't think of anything elseinteresting about this state. Well, I was wrong!
During that first ride to my host family's house I was amazed at the nature and could barely speak. All the trees made me feel as if I were still at home in Slovakia. But nothing could amaze me more than the foliage a couple of months later, when leaves turned red, purple, orange and bright yellow. It is so hard to believe that this coastal state, which is so colorful in fall and cold in winter, can also be very hot in summer with beautiful beaches where you can relax and enjoy time with your friends. Even though the water in the Ocean is too cold for swimming it offers many options such as yachting or whale watching trips. On my trips around the state I found out that I can enjoy the beautiful nature and at the same time can learn the history. When I went to Plymouth Plantation I thought that it would be just like many other museums, but I couldn't be more surprised when I realized that the Plymouth Plantation was a village where actors and actresses dress like the Pilgrims 400 years ago and present the habits and lifestyle of these first settlers. Then there is the Bostonian Freedom Trial of 2.5 miles - a good thing to do on a sunny weekend day where, besides a nice walk one can learn a bit of history and see all the historical buildings. But no matter how beautiful or rich in history Massachusetts is, these are not the things that the people of this state are so proud of - it is the sports such as baseball, football, and basketball that are important! I had never been crazy about sports before, but the excitement of people about the local Red Sox baseball team becoming World Champions affected me and nothing could be more exciting than watching Super Bowl with my host family, friends and neighbors! There are many great things that made me change my opinion about Massachusetts and made me realize that I really love it here! Karolina VaisovaAu Pair in Massachusetts, 2007
